E.S. Wagner Company was awarded three contracts to build 8.5 miles of new US Route 24 in Wabash County, Indiana by the Indiana Department of Transportation. The first contract number 23496 was awarded in October of 1998. The second contract number 24058 was awarded in March of 1999 and the third contract 24290 was awarded in April of 1999. The three projects valued for over $30 million had a fixed completion date of October 2000.
The projects consisted of the following items of work: 2.1 million cubic yards of excavation, 419,429 cubic yards of borrow, 138,777 cubic yards of granular embankment, 511,786 linear feet of storm drainage 12 inch to 60 inch, 2,596 linear feet of box culverts ranging in size from 4x8 to 8x12, 300 linear feet of 28 x 8 feet conspan boxes, 39,653 tons of 6 inch to 36 inch riprap, 204,537 tons aggregate base, 298,746 square yard of 10 inch concrete pavement, and 224,052 square yards of asphalt pavement. The projects also called for 4 three span bridges with concrete I beams.
One of the major challenges to completing the work on schedule was the excavation of self subgrade and backfilling with granular embankment or uniform riprap. Soft subgrade was excavated on all three jobs.
E.S. Wagner Company was successful and completed all three projects four months ahead of schedule with the projects being opened to traffic in August of 2000.
