Through four separate contracts with a combined value of $3,718,664.00, Waste Management retained E.S. Wagner Co. to construct 22.5 acres of new landfill cells, a four acre sedimentation pond and 7 acres of final cap at their Evergreen RDF facility in Northwood, Ohio.
Mass excavation for the four cells totaled 1,100,000 cubic yards during the three year construction period and 120,000 cubic yards of on-site clay was required to construct the re-compacted clay liners. The conventional approach to 3:1 side slope construction would not apply at the Evergreen facility due to the unique design at the landfill that permitted 2:1 side slopes. With 975 linear feet of 2:1 side slope to construct, E.S. Wagner Co. developed an innovative approach to construct and finish the side slopes saving Waste Management both time and money while delivering a quality product.
Approximately 980,000 square feet of 60 mil HDPE geomembrane was used to line the four cells at the completion of the earthwork activities. 75,000 cubic yards of shredded tires were placed in the cells to function as the drainage layer. Additional components of the leachate management system included 2,800 linear feet of 6 HDPE leachate collection piping and 390 linear feet of 24 HDPE slope riser servicing three leachate collection sumps.
Other work on these projects included 250,000 cubic yards of excavation to develop a 4 acre sedimentation pond, installation of 1,250 linear feet 30 CMP storm sewer, and construction of the interim final cap system over 7 acres of the facility.
