ODOT 199-01 (0105)E.S. Wagner served as the managing partner of a joint venture on this project for the Ohio Department of Transportation. The overall scope of the project included the construction of 11 miles of new four lane divided highway with 16 bridges located between Upper Sandusky and Bucyrus, Ohio.
The major quantities of work included 1.2 million cubic yards of excavation, 5.9 million cubic yards of engineered fill, 44,550 lineal feet of storm sewer ranging in size from 12 inch to 120 inch, 9,500 lineal feet of six inch sanitary sewer, 248,840 tons of aggregate base, 620,368 square yards of concrete paving, and 653,018 square yards of cement stabilized sub-grade. In addition, sixteen bridges were constructed for on this project including multiple level structures of US 23. The major components of the bridge work were 6,090 lineal feet of H piling, 7,920 cubic yards of structure concrete, 8,615 cubic yards of high performance superstructure concrete, and 99,000 square feet of MSE wall. E.S. Wagner value engineered ten of the sixteen bridges changing them from flow through abutments to MSE walls thus eliminating two spans for each bridge. This value engineering change resulted in a savings of $1,000,000.
There were two major challenges on this project to complete the work on schedule. First was the installation of the sanitary sewer line. The grade for the sewer line was located approximately ten feet below a water-bearing sand layer. This would require the installation of well points and a dewatering system prior to excavation. The second challenge was the erection of the bridge beams for the multiple level bridges over existing US 23. Night-time road closures of US 23 for approximately two weeks were required to accomplish this task.
E.S. Wagner was able to overcome all the challenges of this project and opened the new roadway to traffic six months ahead of schedule.
