As part of South Carolina Department of Transportations accelerated construction program known as 27 in 7, approximately 200 road and bridge projects across South Carolina were completed in just 7 years, instead of the 27 years it would have taken using traditional methods. One project accelerated due to the 27 in 7 program was the widening of S.C. Route 72 in Laurens and Abbeville Counties. This project was part of two-State, long-range plan to provide a multilane highway between Athens, Georgia and Charlotte, North Carolina. As a result these improvements would help attract industry and promote economic development.

E.S. Wagner served as the prime contractor on two of the six contracts awarded for this work. The first contract extended 4.9 miles along S.C. Route 72 through Mountville, South Carolina. The project consisted of approximately 697,000 cubic yards of excavation, 124,000 square yards of stone base placement, and 7110 lineal feet of storm drainage for the new location and widening of S.C. Route 72. In addition, E.S. Wagner self performed construction of one reinforced flat slab bridge with prestressed concrete beams, and installation of 4.8 miles of water line.

Connecting to the Mountville section of S.C. Route 72, E.S. Wagner served as the prime contractor for another 5.2 miles of new location and widening along S.C. Route 72 through Cross Hill, South Carolina. The project consisted of approximately 486,760 cubic yards of excavation, 97,524 square yards of stone base placement, 16,792 lineal feet of storm drainage, and 17,850 lineal feet of curb and gutter. E.S. Wagner also self performed construction of one reinforced concrete flat slab bridge supported by concrete pile and 5.1 miles of new water line.
