E.S. Wagner served as the prime contractor on ODOT project 0059-01, I-280 in Toledo, Ohio. Beginning in the spring of 2001, this was the first major project associated with the proposed Maumee River Crossing. Essentially the northern approach to the massive future structure, this project called for the total removal, replacement, and widening of I-280 on its existing alignment all while maintaining two lanes of traffic in each direction during daylight hours.

The project consisted of waterline and sanitary sewer work, construction of a pedestrian bridge over the interstate, and a closely monitored, elaborate traffic control plan through one of the busiest interstate corridors in the state. The project also included almost 2,000 feet of concrete faced retaining wall supported by 10,500 lineal feet of driven soldier piling. Highlighting the work was 65,000 square yards of twelve inch plain concrete pavement, self-performed by E.S. Wagner.

An unknown subsurface condition forced a combination of extra work and an acceleration change order during the projects first season. A substantial undercut excavation and stone backfill jeopardized the project schedule. E.S. Wagner, confident in its ability to meet the first seasons milestone traffic switch, was compensated to work seven days a week from early September until December 1, 2001 to undercut, backfill, grade, drain and concrete pave nearly half of the project. This goal was achieved and the entire project was completed on time the following fall.

E.S. Wagners work on this project was recognized with the Smooth Pavement Award for urban divided highways.
