E.S. Wagner Company, LLC served as the prime contractor on the construction of approximately three miles of the J. Verne Smith Parkway in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. Named in honor of the late state senator, the project connected SC Highway 14 and SC Highway 101.

E.S. Wagners work on site included 180,000 cubic yards of excavation, 11,500 of which was in rock, and nearly 13,000 lineal feet of drainage of varying sizes. The highlights of the project were the just under 71,000 square yards of Portland cement concrete pavement and the reinforced concrete flat slab bridge supported by driven h-piles. The single structure bridge was wide enough to accommodate all four lanes of traffic. The excessive width of the deck coupled with the 25 degree skew angle it made with the centerline forced E.S. Wagner to pour the deck with the paving machine extended to well over 140 feet.

The projects final punch list was completed in early 2005, but it was substantially complete and opened to traffic in late 2004. This project was completed approximately six months ahead of schedule.
