E. S. Wagner served as the general contractor on project number 506(07) for the Ohio Department of Transportation. This project was the first ever public-private partnership project in the State of Ohio. All of the funding for this project, including design and inspection, was paid by Honda Manufacturing of America, Inc.

The largest obstacle on this project was Hondas schedule. The project was bid in late November 2007 with a completion date of October 2008. This schedule would require the installation of temporary pavement during late December and January. It also meant that the main embankments for the bridge overpass had to be started in late March, which is not usually attempted based on the weather in Ohio. Through careful planning, ingenuity, and several value engineering proposals, the E.S. Wagner Company was able to keep this project on schedule and complete these weather sensitive items during the cold Ohio winter.

As part of this project, E. S. Wagner constructed a single span prestressed I-beam bridge on pile supported abutments and MSE walls over the CSX railroad. The structure required over 9,400 square feet of MSE wall, 5,180 lineal feet of foundation piling, and approximately 800 cubic yards of structural concrete.

The overpass embankments included 145,000 cubic yards of earth embankment in addition to over 56,000 cubic yards of granular fill. A 500 foot long retaining wall containing over 165,000 pounds of reinforcing steel and 1,200 cubic yards of concrete was also constructed to protect a wetland area and contain the embankment.

The pavement design for the project called for nine inches of non-reinforced concrete pavement consisting of 2 twelve foot driving lanes and shoulders between 8 and 10 feet in width. E. S. Wagner completed this work with a Gomaco Commander III paver and CMI 150 concrete placer.

This was obviously an important project for Honda and will have tremendous economic impacts for Union County and the whole Central Ohio region. This project was completed under a successful partnership between the E.S. Wagner Company, ODOT and Honda Manufacturing of America, Inc.
