E.S.Wagner Co. was contracted to complete the initial site package for the construction of the new Toledo Mudhens Baseball Stadium in downtown Toledo, Ohio. The existing site consisted of demolished building foundations and city streets requiring an extensive clean up before any new construction could take place.

The new playing field was constructed fourteen feet below existing street grades. To accomplish this, over 60,000 square feet of steel sheet piling was installed prior to removing 90,000 cubic yards of excavation. Much of this sheet piling was left in place and now forms the backing of the outfield fence. Made necessary by the low design elevation of the field relative to the surrounding structures and streets, an extensive under drain system was installed under the new playing field and connected to the storm drainage and new storm water pump station.

In keeping with the modern movement to preserve and incorporate surrounding buildings of historical significance when a new ball park is constructed, underpinning was performed to protect existing structures that remained as part of the new site. One such building is featured prominently just beyond the right field fence. This building was carefully monitored to ensure that no movement or damage was taking place during the course of the surrounding construction activities. Upon completion of the stadium, the perimeter drainage, waterlines, sanitary sewers, curbs and streets were reconstructed to accommodate the new structure.

Construction of the new field began in the late fall of 2000. Despite the necessary coordination with multiple other contractors and the difficulty of completing such a project in the middle of a busy section of town, the stadium opened as scheduled on Opening Day, 2002.
