With current U.S. EPA regulations becoming more stringent on storm water treatment, retention basins are being constructed to collect early run off for future treatment at the waste water treatment facilities. Brookford Park was the first of these structures constructed for the City of Toledo. E.S. Wagner served as the prime contractor on this project as part of the Toledo Waterways Initiative.

This 3 million gallon basin constructed on the site of an existing concrete clear well was 135 wide, 240 long and 18 deep, used 4,500 cubic yards of concrete, and 1,200,000 pounds of reinforcing steel. In addition, two pump stations and 1,500 linear feet of force main were constructed. The retention basin also used an innovative vacuum flushing system to clean the floor of the basin after rain events.

E.S. Wagner Company coordinated all aspects of this project including meeting the scheduling needs of a nearby school. Innovative construction techniques were initiated to meet the challenges of a compact and public jobsite along with the use of green ideas to add value to the community and environment. Upon completion, a little league baseball field was constructed on top of the retention basin restoring the park to its original function.

E.S. Wagners performance on this project was rewarded with a 2007 Move Ohio award from the Ohio Contractors Association.
